About JAN codes and this tool

A JAN code (GTIN) is assigned by the brand owner using a GS1 Company Prefix licensed by GS1 Japan (9, 10 or 7 digits starting with 45 or 49), plus an item reference and a check digit. Products sold in retail need a registered prefix.

This tool draws barcodes for numbers you already have; it does not register numbers. For codes used only inside your own store, GS1's prefix list reserves 20 to 29 for retailers' in-store codes, which cannot be used between companies.

Good uses: in-store POS codes, shelf labels, stock and equipment labels, event tickets, QR codes for URLs.
